This post is all about hijab shopping.
You’re out shopping and come across a beautiful floral printed scarf. You buy it right away. After all, it matches 3 of your outfits!
But when you get home and unwrap it, you find it to be so see-through, you’ll need to make sure you double it up or wear a good hijab cap underneath that won’t be too conspicuous.
Been there, done that. But have no fear, I’m going to share tips from my experience.
1. Always check the fabric for transparency.
What looks like a solid ecru, may in fact be a flimsy, sheer light grey in reality. Folding it will not get you the shade you actually bought it for. It’s layers and layers of these fabrics that give you the solid color you see in the package.
I purchased a beige hijab (and a pink one) that looked beautiful when folded and in a cellophane. But when I unfolded it, it was practically colorless and sheer.
2. Buy weather-appropriate fabrics.
This one really is a no-brainer, but I have often times made this mistake. I once purchased 3 light weight, large sized scarves from Banana Republic thinking they would work all year round. I used them a lot! But Wisconsin summer and Texas summer are two very different weathers. As soon as I experienced the Texas heat, away went my scarves, to the back of the closet.
I had to rush over to Voile Chic (because I was constantly coming across their ad on Facebook haha!) and purchased their Premium Chiffon Hijabs in Ivory and Light Taupe (which is no longer available). I am really satisfied with their products. Not just the hijabs but their hijab caps and hijab pins as well. I’m waiting for the next sale to purchase more colors of hijabs. I esp like the fact that their Premium Chiffon hijabs are not slippery and don’t wrinkle easily.
Here’s a guide to good quality hijab caps and where to get them.
3. Invest in Hijab pins and magnets
You will never understand the convenience of magnets and pins until you use them. I always thought them unnecessary but once I tried them, I can’t go back.
They’re a one time investment and very affordable. Here’s a beautiful set of 8 pairs of magnets on Amazon.
I have personally purchased these ‘no-snag’ pins and they’re a game changer. Especially hijabs made out of chiffon and silk -that tend to be more slippery.
4. Only buy washable fabrics.
Dry clean only, hand-wash only hijabs are less likely to be used. We unconsciously label them as high-maintenance and shy away from them.
While it seems obvious that hijabs must always be machine-washable, that isn’t always the case. This is especially true with specialty hijab fabrics like chiffon and pure silk.
I have a bad habit of disregarding care instructions in some instances. I do wash my hijabs in a washing machine, gentle cycle only. If the hijab comes out fine, I throw in all of its siblings in the next load.

5. Keep the drape in mind.
Hijabs made out of fabrics with a good drape can take a look from drab to fab.
It’s already a daily struggle to find modest outfits in the U.S. that don’t look frumpy. The last thing we want is for our hijabs to add to the chaos. Huge and oversized scarves can look stylish but if you decide to try something that size, steer clear of ruffles and frills to avoid looking messy. If you have layers on, keep the hijab standard sized and simple.
If the drape of the fabric is smooth and flow-y, it takes half the work out of styling the hijab and gives an effortlessly presentable look.

Here’s a bonus tip (that isn’t really rocket science but I learned it many years into the game): If you find a hijab that you feel is just right, always go back and buy 2 or 3 of the same style in different colors. Otherwise they might run out, or the sale might end or the company might go bankrupt… so many scenarios. Like the satin hijabs Banana Republic offered a few years ago. They were only available for a season. BR never brought them back.

Yes, absolutely, Hanaa! I have an upcoming post (where to buy hijabs) that I’ll link on this post also. 🙂
Also, try using hijab pins or magnets. They’re a game changer.
